IPAA Oil and Gas Overview Course

The oil and natural gas industry is broad and complicated so we partnered with Energy Training Resources,LLC and developed an information-packed Oil and Gas Overview Course that links together the functional and commercial aspects of the industry. The course has an upstream focus with some midstream information and thoroughly covers the following topics:

The structure of the industry

Petroleum geology and exploration

Mineral rights and leasing

Drilling and completion

Development and production operations

The course is recommended for oil and gas company employees, suppliers, contractors, attorneys, accountants, bankers, investors, traders, insurers, regulators, etc. and qualifies for 7.5 AAPL CEUs, 7 CPDs and 8 CPEs. It received great reviews when it was conducted in Houston and Fort Worth!

Paul Parsons

Paul is the founder of Energy Training Resources. He has been researching topics across the oil and gas industry since 2007 and leads the development of presentation materials for our courses. He instructs many of the courses himself and is uniquely qualified to instruct and answer questions over an industry-wide range of topics.

Paul previously spent 27 years working in the oil and gas industry in a variety of roles. His first three years were with National Supply Company, which was then the world’s largest manufacturer of oilfield equipment (has since evolved into National Oilwell Varco). He then served 24 years with Occidental Petroleum Corporation, one of the largest independent oil and gas companies in the United States.

At Occidental, Paul worked with a variety of domestic and international operations and projects. His earlier roles included acquisition analysis, divestiture coordination, planning, and project reviews. His later roles included serving as divisional chief financial officer for Occidental’s operating divisions in The Netherlands and in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, which is Occidental’s largest operation.

Since founding Energy Training Resources, Paul has been dedicated to acquiring and creating materials that explain a broad and complicated industry in an interesting, engaging and easy-to-understand way. As part of his efforts, Paul scripted, directed and narrated the video “Oil and Gas Drilling: From Planning to Production,” which follows the drilling and completion of a horizontal well and is the most-comprehensive drilling video available. The video was developed primarily for use in our courses but is also being used as a stand-alone instructional video by more than 500 companies.

Paul networks throughout the industry and stays current on industry topics. He is a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the Houston Producers Forum. Paul has presented on oil and gas topics in a variety of forums including the American Petroleum Institute, the Houston Geological Society, the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists and the EnergyMakers show.

EDUCATION: Paul has a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MBA from the University of Houston, and is a Certified Public Accountant. Paul also has a certificate in Professional Land Management from the Petroleum Extension Service of the University of Texas.
